Action capabilities and rate limiters are key concepts in the constraints-led approach (CLA) framework. These two are fundamental to my activity’s design and application process.
Action capabilities allow the athlete to execute a certain skill or motor pattern. These capabilities are dependent on the individual’s physical and perceptual-cognitive characteristics. Factors like force potential, speed, coordination, and decision-making abilities can influence the athlete’s action capabilities. The recognition of the individual’s strengths and limitations (rate limiters, which is explained below) is essential for an optimal preparation (training & practice) process. Rate limiters are constraints that temporarily disrupt the athlete’s ability to perform a specific skill or movement strategy. This includes the previously mentioned action capabilities and/ or lack of experience. For example, if the athlete has poor force acceptance or yielding abilities, this becomes the rate limiter for the particular skill. Identifying the rate limiter(s) is key for the coach to pinpoint and required for continuous improvement. By addressing these limitations through targeted training, individuals can overcome these constraints and improve performance. These two concepts are central to the CLA and my approach to athletic development. It provides a framework and understanding on the importance of a well-designed training program.
