Shared Affordances

Shared affordances in the context of motor learning and ecological dynamics refer to the opportunities for action that are available to multiple athletes (teammates &/ or opponents) within the same environment. It emphasizes that the environment provides movement opportunities that are relevant and accessible to more than one individual.

In motor learning, this concept is crucial because it recognizes that individuals do not operate in isolation but in relation to their environment and other participants. When multiple individuals are involved in a motor task, they perceive and interact with affordances that are shared among them.

Ecological dynamics complements this concept by highlighting the interplay between perception and action within the context of the environment. It proposes that perception and action are inseparable processes, and individuals perceive the environment in terms of the opportunities for action it provides.

The focus is on how individuals, in a group or team setting, perceive and interact with affordances that are relevant to the collective goal or task.

This framework has important implications for sports training and coordination in team settings. It emphasizes the need to design training environments that replicate the actual conditions of competition, allowing athletes to develop a shared understanding of the available movement options.
