Tactical Periodization

Read Now

Tactical periodization is a coaching methodology used primarily in team sports to organize training sessions around specific objectives. It integrates various elements, including:
1. Tactical Focus
  • Tactical periodization prioritizes the development of game-related tactics and strategies. Training sessions are designed to mimic real game situations, allowing athletes to develop the decision-making skills needed to execute tactical plans effectively during competition.
2. Technical Skills
  • While tactical periodization emphasizes tactics, it also incorporates technical skills training. Athletes work on general and/ or specific skills within the context of tactical and game-like situations.
3. Physical Development:
  • Physical system is an integral part of tactical periodization. Training sessions include movements and activities to improve speed, agility, force, and elastic qualities. However, these physical components are integrated into the small sided games rather than isolated drills.
4. Psychological Preparation
  • Tactical periodization also addresses the psychological aspect of performance. Coaches focus on developing the perceptual and cognitive systems through small sided games.
5. Periodization
  • Tactical periodization organizes the training process into distinct periods, each with specific objectives and focuses. These phases typically include pre-season, competitive season, and off-season. During each block, training intensity, volume, and emphasis are adjusted to meet the goals.

By integrating these elements into a unified training program, tactical periodization aims to facilitate well-rounded athletes who possess the tactical understanding, technical skills, physical development, and perceptual attunement required to excel in sport.
